Andy Hargreaves has managed something quite remarkable in this book. He has entwined a personal history with a comprehensive account of major educational changes that coincide with his career. That means that he combines evidence and anecdote, polemic and narrative, debate and discourse, and he does it all in a compelling narrative. He describes his view of education as being ‘an aggressive middle position that is strong on values but pragmatic on strategy’. In a world of relentless polarisation that is a welcome perspective and one that is well-illustrated in this highly readable book.
